SANDALWOOD

The santalum album, the sandalwood tree,  is the aroma of the woods of India because it is a species native to there, although it is also planted in other parts of the world such as America.

The sandalwood is an evergreen tree that can reach from four to nine meters in height and can live for more than a hundred years. Its wood is aromatic and from it, a volatile oil is obtained that is used in herbalism and perfumery.

The shavings of sandalwood are processed to be distilled and obtain oils from them that are used in perfumery.  The oil can also be obtained from the heartwood of the tree and its roots. 

In addition to its uses in  perfumery, , it is very common to burn sandalwood sticks to provide fragrance in rooms and to ward off moths and other insects.

Sandalwood, like all aromas obtained from trees, is used more in  men's perfumes for its robustness, , although it is increasingly used as a base for women's perfumery.
