Il sandalo, aroma di legni dell'India
Il santalum album, l'albero del sandalo, è l'aroma dei boschi dell'India perché è una specie originaria di lì, anche se viene anche piantato in altri luoghi del mondo come l'America.
Il sandalo è un albero sempreverde che può raggiungere i quattro ai nove metri di altezza e può vivere più di cento anni. Il suo legno è aromatico e da esso si ottiene un olio volatile che viene usato in erboristeria e in profumeria.
In India, il sandalo è considerato un albero sacro e il governo indiano lo ha dichiarato di proprietà nazionale per preservarlo ed evitare la deforestazione a cui è stato sottoposto anni fa, mettendo in pericolo la specie. Non è permesso abbatterlo fino a che non raggiunge almeno i trenta anni di vita.
Le schegge di legno di sandalo vengono manipolate per essere distillate e ottenere da esse oli che si usano in profumeria. L'olio può anche essere ottenuto dal cuore dell'albero e dalle sue radici. Il legno viene anche impiegato in ebanisteria e si realizzano scatole, cornici, pettini e oggetti piccoli che vengono intagliati profusamente e che mantengono un aroma molto particolare. Nell'antichità veniva utilizzato anche per la fabbricazione di navi, per la sua leggerezza e galleggiabilità.
Le proprietà del sandalo sono molteplici: il suo olio è eccellente per nutrire le pelli secche, ha proprietà rilassanti ed è utilizzato per le sue proprietà rivitalizzanti, al tempo stesso solleva l'umore e favorisce il sonno. Oltre ai suoi usi in profumeria, è molto comune che si brucino i bastoncini di sandalo per profumare gli ambienti e tenere lontane le tarme e altri insetti.
Il sandalo, come tutti gli aromi ottenuti dagli alberi, è utilizzato maggiormente in profumi maschili per la sua robustezza, anche se è sempre più utilizzato anche come base per la profumeria femminile.
