Sandalwood, scent of Indian woods

By Clara Estévez

El sándalo, aroma de maderas de la India

The santalumalbum, the sandalwood tree, is the scent of the woods of India because it is a species native to there, although it is also planted in other parts of the world such as America.

Sandalwood is an evergreen tree that can reach four to nine meters in height and can live more than one hundred years. Its wood is aromatic and a volatile oil is obtained from it, which is used in herbalism and perfumery.

In India, sandalwood is considered a sacred tree and the Indian government has declared it national property to preserve it and prevent the deforestation to which it was subjected years ago, endangering the species. No logging is allowed until it is at least thirty years old.

.

The sandalwood shavings are manipulated to be distilled to obtain oils used in perfumery. Oil can also be obtained from the heart of the tree and its roots. Wood is also used in cabinetmaking and boxes, frames, combs and small objects that are carved profusely and maintain a very peculiar aroma are made. In ancient times it was also used for the manufacture of boats, due to its lightness and buoyancy.

As a curiosity: sandalwood seeds are used in the manufacture of "the malas"of 108 beads for Hindu, Buddhist and sijeprayer.
The properties of sandalwood are multiple: its oil is excellent for nourishing dry skin, has relaxing properties and is used for its revitalizing properties, while lifting the mood and promoting sleep. In addition to its uses in perfumery, it is very common to burn sandalwood sticks to provide scent in rooms and keep moths and other insects away.
Sandalwood, like all aromas obtained from trees, is used more in male perfumes because of its robustness, although it is also increasingly used as a base for women's perfumery.
