Uno dei prodotti più preziosi in profumeria da tempi immemorabili è l'ambra grigia e la sua storia naviga attraverso i grandi oceani nel corpo di balene e capodogli.
Per migliaia di anni, coraggiosi navigatori e balenieri di tutto il mondo hanno inseguito questi enormi animali marini per recuperare i pezzi di ambra che potevano galleggiare nelle acque dei grandi oceani.
L'ambra grigia è una secrezione grigiastra stomacale che, i capodogli, dopo la digestione, secernono in mare – si possono trovare pezzi da 15 grammi a quattro chili, un vero tesoro - e che, grazie al sale e al sole, a poco a poco si solidificano e galleggiano pazienti nelle acque, fino a che qualcuno fortunato lo trova.
Si calcola che, perché l'ambra abbia la consistenza e la qualità adeguate, è necessario che galleggi nell'acqua, almeno trent'anni . Un tesoro di valore inestimabile nell'antichità, in cui non esisteva nessun sostituto chimico per esso.
L' ambra grigia pura non ha un odore "piacevole" ma, paradossalmente, è indispensabile in profumeria per il potere che ha come fissatore di altri piacevoli aromi.
Grandi regine, da Cleopatra a Maria Antonietta , le monarchie di tutti i tempi e le classi più agiate godevano dell'inebriante aroma dei profumi che, in molti casi, servivano per coprire odori meno piacevoli o per incantare con il loro odore i loro amanti: l'amore, dicono, entra attraverso il naso, e l'ambra ha contribuito a questo.
