Patchouli or Pogostemon Cablin, that scent from the Orient

El pachulí o Pogostemon Cablin, ese aroma de Oriente

The Pogostemon Cablinis a plant commonly known as pachouli. DEssential oilis extracted from its leaves, which is known by the same name and has been used for centuries in perfumery.

It is a shrubby herb that can reach up to 90 centimeters in height and grows in humid and temperate climates. It has flowers with seeds that are very fragrant and bloom during the night. In addition, it does not tolerate exposure to direct sunlight.

For centuries, silk merchants in China transported their precious silks by inserting patchouli leavesinto them so that the moth would not wreak havoc on the fabrics. This gave them a peculiar aroma that has always been associated with opulence and wealth.

Currently, we associate the smell of patchouli with the era of free love and the hippy movement, since it was frequently used in the 1960s and 1970s and, among other things, masked the smell of marijuana. But it has been used in Europe since much earlier, since the 18th century, in the manufacture of all kinds of perfumes.

Pachouli has an intense and sweet aroma which, mixed with other essences in the right proportion, produces intense and long-lasting fragrances that make them highly appreciated in perfumery.

The scent of patchouli continues to evoke, with its final notes, a journey to India and the Orient, a journey to the exotic,to the opulence of the great palaces of the Marajahs and the color of oriental countries.
